LDS Temple Ceremonies

Preparation and LDS Temple Clothing For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, preparing to attend the temple involves many aspects, the most important being spiritual preparation. Upon receiving a temple recommend from their Bishop, there are other preparations to be made, including the purchase of white temple clothing. When members attend the temple, they wear clothing similar to church clothing. Women wear a nice dress and the men wear a white shirt, suit and tie. Inside the temple they change into white temple clothing in a dressing room, where each person is given a private locker and dressing booth. LDS temple dresses have long sleeves, a high neckline and are generally ankle-length. The men’s attire is white pants, white shirt and white tie. White is symbolic of purity, worthiness and cleanliness. It creates an environment of equality, where everyone is the same – dressed in white; no fads are necessary. All worldly power and prestige are left outside as one enters the temple doors, as all are equal in the eyes of God. This unity invites the presence (spirit) of God. Only then does one begin to see things as they really are, to put spiritual priorities above all else. In this peaceful and holy setting, one is able to learn who he really is, and what his purpose is in this life and beyond; to become an eternal family forever. Baptisms for the Dead Baptisms for the dead are performed by proxy inside Mormon temples. As recorded in Mark, Jesus taught that all who believe and are baptized shall be saved. Mormons believe that all people who die without the opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ will be taught the gospel in the “spirit world.” If a person does not believe and accept the gospel there, the baptism on their behalf is of no effect. The Endowment The purpose of the temple endowment for a Latter-Day Saint or Mormon has been described by Brigham Young as follows: “Your endowment is to receive all those ordinances in the house of the Lord which are necessary for you, after you have departed this life, to enable you to walk back to the presence of the Father, passing the angels who stand as sentinels, being enabled to give them the keywords, the signs and tokens, pertaining to the holy priesthood, and gain your eternal exaltation in spite of earth and hell. “ Throughout the endowment ceremony, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints make covenants with God. A covenant is a sacred agreement between God and a person or a group of people. God sets specific conditions and He promises to bless us as we obey those conditions. Worthy men and women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints go through the endowment ceremony when they are called to serve as a missionary, usually between the ages of 19 and 26 years old. Young women who do not serve as missionaries will receive their endowment before they are married in the temple. Marriage Unlike a civil wedding that pronounces “until death do you part,” Mormons believe that a man and woman can be married for time and all eternity. This is known as a “sealing” performed by a sealer who has been called of God and holds the proper Priesthood authority. Through the power of the Priesthood, the sealer pronounces the same promise that Jesus gave Peter that whatsoever he “bound” in this life would be “bound” in heaven (Matthew 16:19).
